If you already have an informative site with a quality affiliate product but simply are not generating sufficient traffic, it may be time to refine your keywords. The first step to refining your keywords is to think like your potential visitors. Imagine what keywords and phrases they might be using to conduct their searches and think how those words will get visitors to your site.

Brainstorm a list of relevant keywords that you believe would attract visitors to your site, and then begin to narrow your list to a specific list of words that are going to be most effective in attracting more visitors to your site. Think about how these keywords work with your site content and consider how your content matches the most effective keywords and phrases. There are two tests you can run to help you refine your keywords and generate increased traffic.

Test 1: Test your Related Keywords

Two tools, in particular, can help you identify search frequencies. You can test you keywords using Overture (http://www.overture.com/d/about/advertisers/) or the 7Search Keywords Tool (http://www.7search.com/scripts/advertiser/sample_get.asp). Both of these tools work in a similar fashion and will reveal the number of times a particular word or phrase has been used to conduct a search, as well as display variations of those words and phrases.

For example, when you type in the keywords “make money on eBay,” you’ll find that surfers used this combination of words 3,875 time. Conversely, the keywords “secrets to make money on eBay” were used but 60 times.

By testing and playing with keywords, you can better determine what text to include in your site and better match it to words and phrases that surfers actually are using. Programs like Overture and 7Search can help you identify the keywords frequently used by surfers, which best match your affiliate products.

When using these tools, be sure to play with variations of your keywords as well as with the order of your keywords. This will help you fine-tune your keywords to match those commonly used during searches.

If you are at loss on keywords options, try Lexical FreeNet (www.lexfn.com), which reveals the relationship among words, phrases, and concepts. Downloadable software, such as www.goodkeywords.com, also can help you further target useful keywords.

Test 2: Test Your Search Engine

After testing your keywords for usability, try them out again, this time using your preferred search engine (for example, Google, Yahoo, or Ask Jeeves). Using the keywords that you’ve tested in Overture and 7Search, you can discover the number of sites that come up.

The trick here is to locate keywords that you know visitors are using (from your first testing phase) and compare them with the number of hits in the search engine (your second testing phase).

Keywords that are too general (even though they are heavily used) may not get surfers to visit your site. There simply will be too many sites for the browser to cull through before arriving at yours. Instead, look for the keywords that have a high rating on Overture and/or 7Search, but that bring up fewer hits on the search engine. These are the keywords that will help increase your ranking on the search engine.

By increasing your ranking, you increase the likelihood that surfers will become visitors…which, as always, leads to increased sales!

Employ Pay-Per-Click Ads

If you’re still looking for more hits and click-throughs, consider running keyword ads on Google, Overture, and others. These pay-per-click ads are generated by keywords you determine (and bid on against others who may wish to use them as well) and often have high rates of return. As always, you’ll have to weigh your costs against your returns.

The Bottom Line: Test your keywords. And then test them again. But most of all, make sure that the keywords match your content and that you apply what you learned during your testing phases.
